Defence Minister Rajnath Singh commissioned INS Mahendragiri (F38) into the Indian Navy at the Naval Dockyard, Visakhapatnam on July 11, 2026. INS Mahendragiri is the fifth ship of the Project 17A (P17A) class of stealth guided-missile frigates, named after the Mahendragiri peak (1,501 m) in Odisha's Eastern Ghats. P17A frigates are being built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL), Mumbai and Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd (GRSE), Kolkata. The previous four: INS Nilgiri, INS Himgiri, INS Udaygiri and INS Dunagiri. P17A features advanced stealth, multi-role combat capability, surface-to-air missiles and anti-submarine warfare systems.
