UNESCO Inscribes Sarnath (India), Mount Olympus (Greece) and D-Day Beaches (France) on World Heritage List — July 2026

The 47th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee inscribed three major sites in July 2026: (1) Ancient Buddhist Site of Sarnath (Uttar Pradesh, India) — where Gautam Buddha delivered his first sermon (Dharmachakra Pravartan) after attaining Enlightenment; home to Dhamek Stupa and the Ashokan Lion Capital (India's National Emblem). (2) Mount Olympus (Greece) — highest peak (2,917m); mythological home of the Greek gods. (3) D-Day Landing Beaches (Normandy, France) — the five WWII Allied landing beaches (Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, Sword) from Operation Overlord on June 6, 1944. India's WHS total is now 43.
