ICMR-NICPR: SHetA2 Oral Therapy Shows Promise Against HPV-Related Cervical Disease — A Potential Treatment Milestone

The ICMR-National Institute of Cancer Prevention and Research (ICMR-NICPR) reported that SHetA2 — an oral small-molecule therapy — shows significant promise for treating Human Papillomavirus (HPV)-related cervical disease. SHetA2 is a synthetic retinoid-related compound that induces apoptosis (programmed cell death) in HPV-infected cells. Cervical cancer is India's second most common cancer in women — with approximately 1.23 lakh new cases and 77,000+ deaths annually. While HPV vaccines (Gardasil, Cervarix and India's own Cervavac by Serum Institute) are preventive, SHetA2 offers a potential oral treatment option for those already infected.
