What is a good typing speed (WPM)?
| WPM Range | Level | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Under 20 WPM | Beginner | Just getting started — hunt-and-peck typing |
| 20–35 WPM | Below avg | Common for casual typists; most jobs need faster |
| 35–50 WPM | Average | Typical for adults who type regularly |
| 50–70 WPM | Above avg | Comfortable for most office and admin jobs |
| 70–90 WPM | Fast | Professional typist level; great for any desk job |
| 90–120 WPM | Expert | Top tier — transcriptionists, coders, court reporters |
| 120+ WPM | Legendary | Elite — top 1% of all typists worldwide |
* Average adult typing speed is 40 WPM. Professional typists average 65–75 WPM. The world record exceeds 212 WPM.
How to improve your typing speed
- →Use all 10 fingers: Learn touch typing — assign each finger to specific keys using the home row (ASDF / JKL;). Never use fewer than 8 fingers.
- →Practice daily: 10–15 minutes of focused daily practice beats long infrequent sessions. Muscle memory takes time — consistency is everything.
- →Accuracy before speed: Aim for 98%+ accuracy first. Speed is a natural result of accuracy. Rushing and making errors actually slows you down over time.
- →Never look at your keyboard: Train your fingers to find keys by feel. F and J have bumps — use them as anchors. This is the biggest single habit that unlocks speed.
- →Use the 2-minute test: Longer tests reveal endurance problems and bad habits. Start with 30s tests, work up to 2–3 minutes as your base improves.
- →Fix your posture: Sit upright, elbows at desk height, wrists slightly elevated. Poor posture causes fatigue that limits speed and can cause RSI.
How WPM is calculated
WPM is calculated using the industry-standard formula: every 5 characters = 1 word, regardless of actual word length. This normalizes results across different passage difficulties.
Only correctly typed characters count toward your WPM. Errors reduce accuracy but do not remove characters from your WPM count if corrected with Backspace.
Who needs a fast typing speed?
- •Data entry clerks and government exam candidates (many require 25–35 WPM minimum)
- •Remote workers — faster typing = higher output per hour
- •Software developers — faster typing means less context switching
- •Writers, journalists, bloggers — speed compounds across thousands of articles
- •Customer support agents who handle live chat
- •Court reporters and medical transcriptionists (100+ WPM required)
