How to practise Remington Gail typing
- Plain English keyboard is enough — no Hindi font or IME to install. The keys type Unicode (Mangal) Hindi.
- New to the layout? Start with Key Drill (one key at a time), then Practice (full paragraph, no timer).
- Switch to Test mode for a timed run and see your KPH, WPM and accuracy.
- Practise 15–20 minutes daily on a real keyboard; phone keyboards give wrong speeds.
What is Remington Gail?
Remington Gail keeps the key positions of the old Hindi typewriter (the same as the Kruti Dev font) but types Unicode Hindi, so the text works in Mangal and every modern app. It is the layout most government typists in MP, UP, Rajasthan and Bihar learn, and the one used in CPCT and many court and secretariat typing tests.
Tips for Remington typists
- Half letters (आधे अक्षर) are made with the halant key between two consonants — practise common joins like क्ष, त्र, ज्ञ, श्र.
- Use the on-screen key chart only while learning — look at the screen, not the keyboard, from week two.
- Keep your fingers on the home row (ASDF / JKL;) even in Hindi — the same finger rules apply.
