How is age calculated for government exams?
Most government exams calculate your age as on a specific cutoff date mentioned in the official notification (usually 1st January or 1st August of the exam year) — not as on the exam date or your birthday. How age is calculated for government job eligibility
Every recruitment notification states a minimum and maximum age and a cutoff date(“age as on 01.01.2026”, for example). Your eligibility depends on your exact age on that date — not on the day you fill the form. Standard upper age relaxation (Central Government)

Worked example
A notification allows 18–27 years as on 01.01.2026. A candidate born on 15.03.1997 is 28 years, 9 months and 17 days old on that date — over the General limit. As an OBC candidate the upper limit becomes 30, so the same person is eligible.
Common mistakes
- Calculating age as on today instead of the notification’s cutoff date.
- Applying relaxation to the minimum age — it only raises the maximum.
- Claiming OBC relaxation without a valid Non-Creamy Layer certificate for the required year.
